expertise / automatic recognition
Application of intelligent cameras is a recurring issue in news papers and
broadcasts. Their use stretches from detection of violence to early warning
for criminal behaviour. It seems that these cameras are autonomous and can
replace human observers. The question remains whether this is really possible
or even desirable. Although many suppliers claim otherwise, most intelligence
is limited to detection of movement. Application without careful integration
into the entire security chain might lead to a flooding of the operator with
false alarms, reducing the system to annoyance which will be ignored shortly
after introduction. These systems certainly have their merits, it requires the
realisation that the human operator is responsible in the end. Useful application
of intelligent cameras should therefore be preceded by the question ‘What
is needed for optimal support of the human operator?’.
Besides security issues, several other application domains exist. The success of automatic recognition strongly depends on the situation and the variation in the occurrence of the recognition targets.
I have substantial experience in both the evaluation and
implementation of automatic recognition and intelligent cameras. Examples are:

I have substantial experience in both the evaluation and
implementation of automatic recognition and intelligent cameras. Examples are:- Consultancy for the Dutch Ministry of Transport about the possibilities and costs of automated number plate recognition for a nation-wide road charging system.
- Development of a system to measure driving behaviour on Dutch motorways (Dutch Ministry of Transport).
- Evaluation of intelligent cameras to detect people throwing stones on motorways (Dutch Ministry of Transport).
- Evaluation of intelligent cameras for detection of unwanted behaviour for Dutch Rail.
